Summary

Nine stripes symbolizing the nine syllables of the moto of the Greek Independence struggle "Freedom or Death", in Greek "E-lef-the-ri-a -i- Tha-na-tos", which led to the formation of modern Greece. The stripes are in blue and white, standing for the deep blue sea and the clear skies (another popular explanation is that the white stands for the white foamy wave tops of the Aegean sea). The cross at the top, left-hand corner emphasizes the deep-rooted connection between the country and Christianity.

The blue and white colours of the Greek flag come from the emblem of Bavaria. It was the Bavarian prince Otto von Wittelsbach who ascended the throne of Greece as Otto I, King of the Hellenes, in 1820. It was that event that brought the colours of Bavaria to Greece. {{Information| |Description=The flag of Greece. |Source=own code |Date= April 24 2006 |Author= (of code) cs:User:-xfi- ( talk) |Permission= PD
